Sometimes children wonder why adults do some of the things they do. In this story, Annie's grandmother explains to her why she weaves rugs. The Old One (Annie's grandmother) weaves rugs to sell so they can buy the things they need. Annie is satisfied with the answer the Old One gives her. However, Annie is not satisfied knowing that her grandmother is growing very close to death. The Old One tells her family she is weaving her last rug. She will die when it is complete. Annie does all she can to slow the progress of the rug. In the end, Annie realized that she cannot stop her grandmother's death. Trade is a way of life. Knowing this, Annie will continue weaving, following in her grandmother's footsteps.
