Unit Summary: The unit begins with a word decoding lesson. This helps get the students familiar with the words they will be hearing throughout the lesson. It is also a good lesson for phonemic awareness. The kids get excited when they are able to recognize a word in something we are reading. The main focus of this unit is for the students to gain an understanding of how the pilgrims lived, worked, and played and how it compares to Thanksgiving today. Thanksgiving has a lot of history behind it and it is important for the students to understand why we have Thanksgiving and the reasons for the things we eat and do on this great celebration. They also get to have fun with the varied art activities included in the lesson. We have to remember not to take all the fun out of Thanksgiving by turning it into a complete history lesson. <--Back to Main Page
