Unit Overview


Week 1

Day1: Introduce Unit, KWL, Read the book "The Best Town in the World," Write classroom shared writing book of why Logan is the best town in the world.

Day 2: Have students make commercials that would influence people to come to Logan. They would include information about weather, recreational activities, populations, places to stay, etc. A great resource for this activity would be the tourist guides found at the local Chamber of Commerce.

Day 3: Show students pictures of different sites around Logan identify them and their historical significance. Introduce partner research project in which student will study one of those places of interest to them.

Day 4: Teach students about different ways to research about their topic. Give requirement for a good researched project (let students give input about this). Begin researching.

Day 5: Continue research project


Week 2

Day 1: Students present what they learned in research project to class

Day 2: Select a couple events in Logan history and perform drama reenactments of the event

Day 3: Have a guest speaker come talk about how life was different when they were young. Read a journal of a child during early Logan settlement. Have group discussions about why Logan was different during those time periods and what leads to change.

Day 4: Math activity with bartering and trading of supplies from 100 years ago.

Day 5: Introduce laws from long ago that seem silly now. Discuss changes in government. Predict and write laws that might change in the future.


Week 3

Day 1: Talk about different jobs that were available years ago and compare them to jobs that we have now. Look at yellow pages and compare the number of place of entertainment using graphs.

Day 2: Have students take a survey of a person employed in a profession they may be interested in. Have students come up with the questions and practice interview techniques.

Day 3: Report findings from interviews in small 4-5 person groups. Share with whole class interesting findings. Talk about Logan in the future. Have students create an invention that may exist in the future they could, draw pictures of it, write about it in a story, or make an invention. Have a class discussion about how those inventions would change life.

Day 4: Culminating Activity- Make a mural of Logan Past, present, and future.

Day 5: Take students on a field trip to see local historical sites.



My Favorite Lesson

Topic: Logan City Grade Level: 2nd



-Students will demonstrate knowledge about historical events that happened in Logan.

-Students will recognize events that happened at historical sites in Logan.



-Any props, dress-ups, or scenery that can help students portray the events.

They are not required to use props because the students can pantomime for this activity.

-Outlines of a couple historical events that happened in the valley.



1. The teacher will tell the students about an event that happened in Logan as if they were there.

2. The class will be split into 3 small groups with a teacher to facilitate each group. The teacher as facilitator will tell the students the main details about the event they are to act out in their skit. There should be 4-5 important details so the students can remember them and the reenactment is easier to put together. The teacher in each group will help students come up with their own ideas and act them out. The students should be able to perform something that they designed themselves.

3. The groups will act out their skits in front of the class. In order for them to learn about the other events they will keep track of what they learn about. After the skit the class will discuss the event and what they learned from the skit.



The teacher will be able to tell if the groups performing have learned the information correct by their performance. As a class the teacher will go over the main events that the class learned.
