The art of the Italian Renaissance WebQuest

Introduction:

If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all.

Lord, grant that I may always desire more than I can accomplish. -Michelangelo-

The Italian Resaissance was a wonderful time in history for the arts. You will have the opportunity to learn about the life and talents of an artist, scientist, or architect from this time in history. You will learn of how they were inspired in their work, the sacrifices that they were required to make, and how their work was received by the individuals of that time.

While you are viewing the art take the time to appericate the color. At the time that these pictures were painted, paint had to be created by the artist and his helpers. It took time for these indiividuals to crush and blend the materials used in the paint order to get the perfect shade. Look at the artist's techniques and the details that were used in creating these masterpieces. I want you to learn to appreciate art and the effort it took to create it.

Task:

This site will help you to create a class presentation on an artist, scientist, or architect, which was a major influence during the Italian Renaissance.  It is also to help you develop your computer skills.  Be sure to read the entire webquest before you begin and refer to it often while completing the assignment.

 Process:

You may work in groups of 2 or 3.  You will need to choose an individual from the list below.

Artists                                                          di Vinci

Boticelli                                                        Michelangelo

Raphael                                                        Vasari

Donatello                                                      Science and Architecture

Ghiberti                                                        Galileo

Gozzoli                                                         Brunelleschi

Once you have chosen individuals you will then use the resource section to gather the information necessary to complete a 10 minute presentation for the class.

Your presentation will also need to be 2 pages typed using a 12 pt font, times new roman, doubled spaced.

A copy of 2 different works of art or inventions created by this individual will be required on an 8x10 sheet of paper and mounted on poster board or colored paper.

Make sure you have included the following information in your presentation.

  • What influenced this individual to become the artist, scientist, or architect?
  • What type of education did they receive?
  • Where did he live most of his life?
  • Did they receive any support from individuals? Who were they?
  • Who commissioned their work?
  • What was one of their first works?
  • How was their art or invention perceived in Italy during this time?
  • How did they feel about their own work?
  • What was their most monumental accomplishment?
  • What did you find to be most interesting about this individual?
  • If you lived in Italy during the Italian renaissance, do you think that you would have liked to be an artist? Why or why not.  Give at least three reasons.

Learning Advice:

It is important that you make sure that you read the articles carefully and write down the information that will be necessary to complete your report.

Once you have chosen a picture right click on it to enlarge it.  Once you have done that, left click on the picture again and select copy.  Paste the picture into word and then format it.  Enlarge the picture as much as possible with out making it unclear.

Some of the picture will not be able to be copied and must be printed in their original format.

Now that you have gather your information and picture, get with your group and write your paper.  It may be best to divide the questions up evenly among the group.

When writing your paper be sure to follow the grading rubric below.

 Conclusion:

Once you have completed this project you should now be familiar with an individual of the renaissance. You should understand what influenced them in creating the works of art that are still popular to this day. You should also understand why their art was also important in their own time.

Make sure that your group practices your presentation.  All members of the group must contribute in some way when the presentation is being given.  This is your chance to teach the class.  It is important that you relay to the class your knowledge of the individual in which you chose.
