Dear Parent,

Our class has been discussing differences and what makes each of us different. We began our unit by listing and graphing the differences observed in our classroom. For example, we found two students who could speak a language other than English, and one child who had green eyes!! We then discussed that although we may be different from one another, we are still human beings and deserve to be treated equally. A great example that was shared with the class, was the life of Ruby Bridges. A six year old African American girl in the early 1960's, Ruby Bridges faced a mob of angry people every day. Ruby was simply obeying the order given by a judge in New Orleans to attend an all white elementary school. For several months, Ruby was the only one in that elementary school, other than her teacher. None of the white people wanted their children to go to school with a black girl. Ruby Bridges didn't let her differences get in the way of her education.

As a culminating activity, our class would like to invite each parent or guardian to share with us a difference that is celebrated in each home. We have set aside the last two hours of school this Friday to share these differences. Please feel free to bring pictures, clothing, food or anything else that may be of interest to our class.

I would like to hear from those who plan on coming no later than Wednesday, so that I can adjust the class schedule accordingly. We hope to see each and every one of you on Friday to celebrate our differences. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me.
