NASA Educational Videos Available to Educators:
NASA has produced hundreds of videotapes chronicling NASA's state-of-the-art research and technology. Teachers may either order these through NASA CORE, or use their local NASA Educator Resource Center and duplicate the videos themselves. Topics include careers, earth science, energy, history of flight, life sciences, living in space, manned spaceflight, mathematics, physics, social sciences, space exploration, space sciences, technology education and utilization, and weather.
On TeacherLINK, you can view or search the YETC's NASA Videos database. See what videos we have, along with a brief description, grade level, length, captioning, date produced, and associated teacher materials. (Or go to the CORE website to see the entire video collection NASA has to offer.)
NASA produces some video series that are now entirely online (view the videos online, get the teacher supplemental materials in Acrobat PDF format, etc.)
NASA Connect: NASA CONNECT is an annual series of FREE integrated math, science, and technology programs for students in grades 6&endash;8. Each program has three components: (1) a 30-minute television broadcast that can be viewed live or taped for later use, (2) an educator guide describing a hands-on activity, and (3) an interactive web activity that provides educators an opportunity to use technology in the classroom setting. These three components &emdash; television broadcast, educator guide, and web activity&emdash; are designed as an integrated instructional package.NASA CONNECT is FREE to educators. Registered educators will receive, via e-mail, a reminder of upcoming shows, a show summary, and a PDF version of the educator guide. NASA CONNECT is a U.S. Government product and is not subject to copyright. There are no fees or licensing agreements. Broadcast and off-air rights are unlimited and granted in perpetuity.
Endorsed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), NASA CONNECT supports national mathematics, science, and technology standards. NASA CONNECT seeks to establish a "connection" between the mathematics, science, and technology concepts taught in the classroom and the mathematics, science, and technology used everyday by NASA researchers. By demonstrating the processes of creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, NASA CONNECT enhances and enriches mathematics, science, and technology education.
NASA SCIence Files: The NASA SCIence Files series is a distance learning initiative designed to integrate and enhance the teaching of mathematics, science, and technology in grades 3-5. Each episode includes hands-on classroom and home activities, virtual field trips, subject-matter experts, and Dr. "D," the tree house detectives' next-door neighbor and mentor. The tree house detectives form an ethnically diverse cast of inquisitive school children who use Problem-Based Learning strategies and scientific inquiry to investigate a variety of issues and problems.
NASA Destination Tomorrow: NASA's Destination Tomorrow is a series of 30-minute educational programs that focus on NASA research, including new technologies, advanced aerodynamics, past achievements and medical breakthroughs. Each exciting program gives the audience an inside look at NASA and demonstrates how research and technology relates to our everyday lives. If it's cutting edge technology, medical breakthroughs or advanced aeronautical research - NASA's Destination Tomorrow will bring it to you first.
These program air on many PBS, cable, and ITV stations throughout the U.S. The program is also broadcast internationally through the Voice of America.
Stations can receive this programming for FREE by registering online or by calling 757-864-6100.
Programs are developed in cooperation with Christopher Newport University. Program captioning is funded by a grant from NEC Foundation of America. Broadcast and off air rights are unlimited and are granted in perpetuity.
NASA Liftoff to Learning Series: Every liftoff of the Space Shuttle is the beginning of a voyage of exploration and discovery. The experiences of Shuttle astronauts capture the imagination of students of all ages. Students study science, mathematics, geography, and technology with crew members aboard Space Shuttle flights. Space becomes the departure point for learning, integrating many other subject areas and bringing them to life.
Recognizing the potential of the Space Shuttle experience in the classroom, NASA's Education Division and the Johnson Space Center's Flight Crew Operations Directorate have joined forces to create a dynamic videotape series to support educators in the classroom. Liftoff to Learning captures the excitement of space flight and explains, in basic and practical terms, the scientific, mathematical, and technological concepts that make space flight possible. These learning tools also provide concrete examples of the global perspective space flight offers and the new frontiers of research and exploration space flight has created.
Taking advantage of state-of-the-art video production facilities and computer animation capabilities of the NASA Johnson Space Center, Liftoff to Learning programs combine the stunning visual images of space flight with clear and entertaining graphics. Each program comes with a printed video resource guide that provides valuable background information for teachers, resources for additional study, and practical hands-on demonstrations of some of the concepts presented in the videotapes.
