NASA Videos - Misc.

Long list of miscellaneous movies and series produced by NASA for the classroom

NASA eClips

Short educational vodcasts focused on various audiences. NASA eClips™ are short, relevant educational video segments. These videos inspire and engage students, helping them see real world connections. New video segments are produced weekly exploring current applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, topics. The programs are produced for targeted audiences: K-5, 6-8, 9-12 and the general public.

NASA eClips™ offer unlimited flexibility in the classroom for timing, sequencing and pacing instruction to meet the needs of students and classroom instructors. Educational material for this program is selected based on national curriculum standards identified by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, or NCTM, the National Science Teachers Association, or NSTA, and the International Society for Technology in Education, or ISTE.

NASA Liftoff to Learning

NASA's Liftoff to Learning Video Series captures the excitement of space flight and explains, in basic and practical terms, the scientific, mathematical, and technologic concepts that make space flight possible. Each program comes with a printed video resource guide with background information, resources, and activities.

NASA SCIence Files

The NASA SCIence Files is a series of instructional programs consisting of broadcast, print, and online elements. Emphasizing standards-based instruction, Problem-Based Learning, and science as inquiry, the series seeks to motivate students in grades 3-5 to become critical thinkers and active problem solvers. Each program supports the national mathematics, science, and technology standards and includes:

  • a 60-minute video broadcast
  • a companion educator's guide
  • web-based activities and materials
  • information about NASA programs, projects, facilities, and researchers

The series was discontinued in 2006 and replaced by eClips.

NASA Connect

NASA CONNECT is an annual series of FREE integrated math, science, and technology programs for students in grades 6-8. Each program has three components: (1) a 30-minute television broadcast that can be viewed live or taped for later use, (2) an educator guide describing a hands-on activity, and (3) an interactive web activity that provides educators an opportunity to use technology in the classroom setting. These three components - television broadcast, educator guide, and web activity - are designed as an integrated instructional package. The series was discontinued in 2006 and replaced by eClips.

NASA Destination Tomorrow

NASA's Destination Tomorrow is a series of 30-minute educational programs that focus on NASA research, including new technologies, advanced aerodynamics, past achievements and medical breakthroughs. Each exciting program gives the audience an inside look at NASA and demonstrates how research and technology relates to our everyday lives. If it's cutting edge technology, medical breakthroughs or advanced aeronautical research - NASA's Destination Tomorrow will bring it to you first. The series was discontinued in 2006 and replaced by eClips.

NASA Globe Program

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based education and science program.

For Students, GLOBE provides the opportunity to learn by:

  • Taking scientifically valid measurements in the fields of atmosphere, hydrology, soils, and land cover/phenology - depending upon their local curricula
  • Reporting their data through the Internet
  • Publishing their research projects based on GLOBE data and protocols
  • Creating maps and graphs on the free interactive Web site to analyze data sets
  • Collaborating with scientists and other GLOBE students around the world

For Teachers, GLOBE provides assistance through:

  • Training at professional development workshops
  • Teacher's Guide, "how-to" videos, and other materials
  • Continuing support from a Help Desk, scientists, and partners
  • Contact with other teachers, students, and scientists worldwide.

For International and U.S. Partners, GLOBE provides:

  • Train-the-Trainer workshops
  • Guidance and support for mentoring teachers

NASA Journey into Cyberspace

This program series Is sponsored and co-produced by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and was broadcast in October 1997. In the first videotape, Dr. Shelley Canright of the NASA Langley Research Center presents an informal review of the program materials explaining their dual focus: to stimulate career exploration and to provide science/math-related activities and concepts. The subsequent fice programs transport two middle school students magically through their computer to a series of university campuses, including the University of Virginia, the College of William and Mary, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, and Hampton University. On their journey, the sudents enlist the aid of university students as they work on completing a career project for their science class. Each program focuses on university students doing real world research and covers a variety of careers in the areas of mathematics, science, and engineering. The university students also explain how their ordinary interests have led to extraordinary opportunities in high-tech research and development. Additional science and career resources are available at their web site at: http://careerjourney.vsgc.odu.edu.

Project Mathematics

Project MATHEMATICS! videos explore basic topics in high school mathematics in ways that cannot be done at the chalkboard or in a textbook. They bring mathematics to life with imaginative computer animation, live action, music, special effects, and a sense of humor.

Young people are attracted to mathematics through high-quality instructional modules that show mathematics to be understandable, exciting, and eminently worthwhile. Each module consists of a video together with a workbook/study guide, and explores a basic topic in mathematics that can be integrated into any high school or community college curriculum. The modules encourage interaction between students and teachers.

Video technology provides a highly efficient way of conveying information. Visual images make a much greater impact than printed or spoken words, especially when the images are in motion and are accompanied by music and sound effects. These videos provide a valuable pedagogical tool for supporting mathematics instruction.

About the Videos (and how to play them)...

All the digitized videos have been encoded as MP4 files for play on computers. All video files have been compressed into .ZIP archives, and must be "unzipped" before using them.

Many computer video players (Realplayer, Windows Media Player, Quicktime) will handle MPEG 4 movie formats correctly. So, first try playing one of the movie files to see if it will play correctly on your computer without any special programs being installed.

If it won't play, or if you're missing either audio or video, please download and use the free VLC player from http://videolan.org.
