April 19, 1943

Dear Bill,

I'm a day late in getting this letter in the mail. I hope I never see another day like yesterday. Little Willie got into my purse and made a mess. More than a mess, actually. He tore up my sugar coupons! I've checked around and don't think I can get them replaced. Thank goodness Marie next door works at the same shipyard as I do. I can ride with her until I get next month's gas coupons.

My job at the shipyard is okay. Who would have ever thought I could use a welding torch. I'm pretty good at it! It isn't the easiest job. But it's helping you and everyone else get this terrible war over with. That is what's important.

And besides, tha pay is good. I'm saving $50 each month-buying war bonds. Julie has been buying savings stamps at school. Can you imagine-our little first grader has almost enough money to get a $25 bond! I remember when she was just a baby. In the 1930's $25 seemed like a million. You were out of work, and your folks has lost their farm. Things sure have changed in a few short years.

Julie has been helping Tom collect tinfoil, and aluminum. Your mom has been saving grease. It's hard to imagine how used grease can help in the war effort. Everyone has been helping in one way or another. We're glad to do our part.

I know you can't tell me where you are. I wish I knew. On second thought, I'm glad I don't know. I'm sure I'd worry more if I knew. Every day the newspapers tell about fighting in Europe and the Pacific.

Last Saturday I went to the Red Cross and helped roll bandages. Next week . . .I've run out of space and time, so I will close for now. I'll write again soon, I pray for your safetyl.
